Upgrading certificate in Animal health 

Upgrading certificate in Animal health course is a course designed to meet the requirement of Kenya Veterinary Board according to The Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals Act No. 29 of 2011 which mandates the Kenya Veterinary Board to regulate all veterinary training and education. In particular, Section 17 (1) (ii) requires graduates qualified in animal husbandry, range management or wildlife health, to undergo a course of not less than one year in animal health prescribed by the Board. Currently, the curricula offering the above-mentioned courses do not provide adequate training in animal health to meet the requirements for registration of graduates by the Act. The upgrading, curriculum therefore provides adequate guidelines on training required to bridge the existing gaps and facilitate the registration of the graduates.

The graduates of this course are able to offer the essential services of animal health which are important in animal value chains since they comprise the Frontline Extension Workers. They will play a major role in capacity building, livestock producers on good husbandry practices to assure optimal production while minimizing animal health risks. They will participate in animal disease control, disease surveillance, animal welfare, animal food safety assurance, livestock breeding and breed improvement and training of farmers in modern livestock production technologies that enhance productivity and access to markets.

The upgrading course is also designed in accordance to the specification and requirement by Kenya Veterinary Board to be registered to provide human resource in animal health industry in order to develop the animal resource industry in Kenya for improved food security and safety, better economic growth, employment creation and poverty reduction. This is in line with the economic pillar of the KenyaVision 2030. The Programme will draw graduants from different institutions that produce individuals that do not meet minimum qualification of Kenya Veterinary board to be registered to practice in the profession.

Goal

To train personnel who can be registered by the board to practice in animal health industry as Para-professional for development of the animal resource industry.

Objectives

  • To provide opportunities to Graduates to be registered by the Kenya veterinary board to practice and advancement in the field of animal sciences.
  • To equip the trainees with core competencies and skills to upscale the knowledge of prescribed graduates to the required standards in animal health practice.
  • To equip the trainees with knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective participation in livestock production, management, disease control, public health and extension.
  • To provide the public and private sectors with personnel knowledgeable and skilled in animal health industry.

Duration of the Course

The course duration is one academic year with two semesters and 270 hours of field attachment.  Each semester consists of 15 weeks of course work.

 Admission criteria

  • The admission requirements shall be Certificate, Diploma or Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry, Range Management or Wildlife Health from Institutions approved by the Kenya Veterinary Board
  • Any other qualification recognized by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
