Certificate in Animal Health and Production

Certificate holders in Animal Health and Production are important in animal value chains since they comprise the Frontline Extension Workers. The certificate graduates play a major role in capacity building livestock producers on good husbandry practices to assure optimal production while minimizing animal health risks. Specifically, they participate in animal disease control, disease surveillance, animal welfare, animal food safety assurance, livestock breeding and breed improvement and training of farmers in modern livestock production technologies that enhance productivity and access to markets.

This certificate course is therefore designed to provide human resource in animal health and production in order to develop the animal resource industry in Kenya for improved food security and safety, better economic growth, employment creation and poverty reduction. This is in line with the economic pillar of the KenyaVision 2030. The Programme will draw students from secondary school graduates.

Goal

To train personnel in animal health and production for development of the animal resource
industry.

Objectives

  •  To equip the animal health and production trainees with knowledge and practical skills
    necessary for effective participation in livestock production, management, disease
    control, public health and extension.
  • To provide opportunities to secondary school graduates for advancement in the field of
    animal sciences.
  • To provide the public and private sectors with personnel knowledgeable and skilled in
    animal health and production.

Certificate in Animal Health and Production

Duration of the Course

The course duration is two academic years of four semesters and 280 hours of field attachment.
Each semester consists of 15 weeks of course work.

Admission criteria

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a mean grade of C minus (C-)
    and a minimum of C- in Biology or Biological Sciences;
  • Division III of a maximum of 36 points and a credit pass in Biology or its equivalent;
  • Any other qualification recognized by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
